A stomach-churning gore-a-thon pandering to viewers' basest appetites for violence, Saw III is a repellent piece of schlock that manages to disgust and bore you, often simultaneously. The latest but undoubtedly not last entry in the lucrative Saw franchise, it ups the stakes to even more sadistic extremes, as that homicidal life-coach, Jigsaw (Tobin Bell), returns to play another round of deadly games with selfish victims needing lessons in gratitude.

The franchise brain-trust, James Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell, concocted the story for Saw III, which picks up immediately where Saw II left off, with hothead police detective Eric Matthews (Donnie Wahlberg) frantically trying to escape Jigsaw's charnel house of horrors. Naturally, he comes to a horrible end, as does another victim, Troy (J. LaRose), a career criminal who repays his debt to society in fullactually, in bloody piecesthanks to Jigsaw and his apprentice, Amanda (Shawnee Smith). But the odd couple's fun and games may soon come to an end, for Jigsaw is terminally ill with an inoperable brain tumor. Rather than deal with an HMO, Amanda simply kidnaps Dr. Lynn Denlon (Bahar Somekh), a brilliant, self-absorbed, and self-medicating brain surgeon, and forces her to save Jigsawor else. Meanwhile, Jeff (Angus Macfayden), the angry, hate-consumed father of a child killed by a drunk driver, gets a blood-splattered lesson in the importance of forgiveness.

Aside from a couple of nasty twists late in the narrative, surprises and scares are generally MIA from Saw III, which pads the narrative with flashbacks detailing the evolution of Jigsaw and Amanda's unholy bond. Not that people come to Saw III or any of its gruesome ilk looking for character development or narrative logic, which would only get in the way of the film's "money shots," i.e., the torture scenes. Gore aficionados will take particular delight in some of the "new and improved" ways that Jigsaw and Amanda teach their selfish and ungrateful victims to carpe diem. For the rest of us, however, sitting through Saw III has all the appeal of watching an autopsy being performed, and not a very entertaining one at that.
